Treating Glaucoma in Rockford

Glaucoma is the second largest cause of blindness. Our practice is dedicated to preventing this disease from compromising your vision. Rockford Eye & Laser Center provides glaucoma treatment in Rockford and the neighboring Northern Illinois areas.

The Value of Prompt Glaucoma Care

As a disease, glaucoma comes in several variations and does not adhere to the same set of symptoms in all cases. The two most prominent types of this condition are open-angle and closed-angle, both of which damage the nerve connecting the eye to the brain. Prompt care is necessary for either variation, however closed-angle glaucoma is a medical emergency.

Call our practice immediately at 815-227-0077 if you are experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Intense ocular pain
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sudden onset of blurred vision

The damage done by closed-angle glaucoma occurs quickly. Visiting us as soon as possible when these symptoms occur gives our team of eye specialists the best chance to save your sight.

Open-angle glaucoma is typically only noticeable when the vision becomes significantly impaired, causing peripheral vision to erode and scotomata, or empty spaces within line of sight, to appear. While many patients are tempted to put off treatment until their vision is fully diminished, any amount of vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored. The team of eye care specialists at our Rockford practice has the education and experience to assess your visual health and determine the best course of treatment.

What Treatments Can I Expect?

Rockford Eye & Laser Center helps patients overcome the symptoms of glaucoma through both surgical and non-surgical means.

Laser eye surgery is a cornerstone treatment at our practice. Among options for care, we provide selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) as a comfortable outpatient procedure to treat open-angle glaucoma. SLT is used to shrink the eye tissue for effective fluid drainage, reducing the pressure that causes glaucoma. These lasers can also be used in iridotomy, a procedure which treats closed-angle glaucoma. Patients who are not candidates for laser eye surgery can instead benefit from traditional trabeculectomy.

If you are not able to undergo surgery for any reason, we provide non-surgical options, including eye drop therapy and carbonic anhydrase inhibitor pills. Both medications are proven to manage the effects of intraocular pressure, the source of both major types of glaucoma.
